Our last SnB of 2009…and changes for 2010

By Helene | January 2, 2010

Our last SnB of the year was a great crowd of knitters and crocheters ready to decompress and blow off some post christmas steam. Silly me, I thought it would be a small group being smack between christmas and new years….our 5 soon turned into I think close to 20…I was too busy laughing to actually count.

Many of us seemed to be in holiday forgetful mode…I forgot the yarn winder for Maggie – which I will remember next week for anyone who has a skein or two that needs winding. There were forgotten books, tools – you name it…we all had post holiday whatever you want to call it! Losing things seemed to be a theme too – among the missing, my finishing needle case and one of Wendy’s thrum mittens. I’m happy to report that I found the case under my sofa this afternoon – Wendy has still yet to find her mitten at last check, but she’s sure that it will turn up when she really looks. If not there were several offers to lend out the young children who are expert at turning anything and everything up if they are let loose in your house (this is good to know!).

We all rejoiced that the small amount of holiday knitting we had promised was in the past and there were tons of projects for the year in our heads.

Lots coming up for 2010…so here we go!

First up is the OWL KAL. General consensus is that yarn should be selected and ordered this week…it’s going to start soon so if you’re on the fence about joining in – now’s the time to make up your mind! There’s a more in depth discussion on the Rav forum about the OWL KAL so if you need info on yarn selection that would be a great place to start. FYI we decided on a Sylvie KAL later this spring but that can wait.

Our Vermont trip is definitely on….we’re planning for May. We’ve found a great house to rent and a bunch of stores to visit within a 45 minute drive from our Woodstock destination. Discussions about who is going and what the cost per person will be happening at our next meeting as we start to fine tune all the details and put the trip together.

Finally and probably most important we are exploring a change of venue!!!
We have loved our time at Smokey Bones over the past year, however the general consensus is that it may be time to move on. The up side of having the back room to ourselves is awesome, but we acknowledge the down side of the non changing menu and the inconsistent food and service.

Dee and I spent a few hours exploring places bantered around at last weeks meeting this morning / afternoon. The issue with some of the chains is that while they would love to have us, there is little flexibility in seating…and lets face it we love our group table. Many of the places with function rooms would require us to pay a reservation fee each time we wanted to meet – not really cost effective…have no fear knitters, because I believe we have found a solution.

We’re thinking of giving the Sandbar grill a try. Their first response to “we’re a local group looking for a local venue” was “we’d love to be your local venue”! It’s a fun place…kind of like key west right in Taunton Center. (just off the green on Weir Street). They have plenty of parking. The menu has everything on it from pizza to wraps to salads to appetizers and dinners. What’s really fantastic is that they have a function room that we can use every week. Even cooler is that the function room (called the Tiki Room) has its on entrance. On the occasional Wednesday that there’s a party we can pull tables together in the restaurant like we do at Smokey Bones. There are four owners…We spoke to John who will speak with the others and then give me a call on Monday to make sure that everyone is on board. If they are Dee and I definitely think its worth a try. Oh…did I mention that the function room has BRIGHT lighting??? The Sandbar Grill’s website is here

We thought that perhaps we can pick a different night for a test run and gather as many of us as can make it and see what its like. If the consensus is good then we can make it official…please post your thoughts here or on ravelry.

Looking forward to an amazing 2010!
